Day 1
You could practically spend an entire week at the mouth of the river on the border with Senegal such is the diversity of fishing available in your kayak. The deep pool just as the river gives way to the surf is best on an incoming tide, so we base the rest of our day around these times. There is no limit to the size and variety of fish at the mouth of this river, Barracuda, Ladyfish, Tarpon, Snapper, Captainfish, Jacks, even Tuna are regular visitors. Your Kayak will have both a bait and spinning rod availavble, as well as a great selection of terminal tackle. Just to make sure the fish are in the mood your guide also carries a big bucket of chum. If you are in the mood for lunch, it is a 20 minute paddle back to our Kartung base, where our lads will barbeque some of your catch.
Day 2
Fishing the mangroves of the Lower Gambia River at the South Bank near Lamin Lodge. The mangroves attract all the usual suspects and half the fun is anticipating what is on the other end of your line.Day 3
A chance to fish the upper pools on the River Allahain, which are home to some massive Captainfish, and Cassava. Normally live bait is our preferred method, although plugs, and shrimp are also very effective.
Day 4
Now that you are comfortable in your Kayak it is time for the open sea, although not too far out. Still in South Gambia and only a 15 minute drive from your lodge are the offshore reefs between Tanje and Brufut. These hold some really big predators who gather to feed on those further down the food chain. Livebait is our preferred method, although we also use prawns and Bongafish. The Bonga is like a herring, and is net caught in vast quantities by the fishermen at Tanje. Then it is smoked much like a kipper, and exported throughout Africa. You can smell the smokehouses, long before you see Tange, but it is a place well worth visiting.Day 5
The reefs offshore at Gunjur are among the best on the Gambian Coast. A full day drift fishing should produce some good results.Day 6
The last full day is normally spent along the north bank of the river Gambia on the Barra Reef. In season this is where all the big Tarpon are hooked. Also expect big Tuna, Barracuda, Ray, and Shark. Getting to the north bank involves a ferry trip, and will give you an opportunity to see Banjul.Your last night :
Normally we like to make the last night a bit special by having a beach barbeque from our catch that day. As the sun sets you can sit by an open fire listening to the warm Atlantic as it washes on Paradise Beach. Above the black starfilled sky undiluted by reflective light is unlike anything you see in Europe. Add a few cool beers, and the friends you have made fishing, does life get any better. Before your flight :
Normally return flights are mid to late afternoon, and with the airport just 30 mins away there is time for one last adventure. Your guide will take you a few miles along the beach to fish the surf where a creek flows into the sea. This is one of the best beach fishing locations in Gambia, and will send you home with a smile. If you have never tried Kayak Fishing take a look at some of these !
